The Final Chapter – Post 7

I took a screen shoot of my videos final edits. I’m really proud of this project because this is one video that I felt I didn’t need to cover up my bad work with music. I still added some songs but just as background noise not to cover up bad video footage.

Here’s the finished product of my work:

Blog Post #6 – Rough Cut

Editing my Documentary – I still have over an hour of footage even after editing because I spent every Saturday this entire semester filming the guardians larping. I have so much content it’s been difficult deciding what content to keep and what content to cut.

I could make multiple different videos with all the content I have. I’m just deciding which moments are most pertinent to this story. I also am having a difficult time tying the story together because I don’t have one story I have multiple. My biggest challenge for this project is that I’m so use to making 30 second commercials it’s hard to switch to now making a 7 minute documentary.

Presentation- Practical vs CGI

“One of the fatal mistakes that almost every science fiction film makes is that they spend so much time on the settings, creating the environment….what they’re doing is showing off the amount of work they’ve done…the story is not the setting, the story is the story…a special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing” –George Lucas 1983

Benefits and Disadvantages of Practical Effects -Films with incredible stories but were having major production problems where like Jaws and Jurassic Park.

Blog Post 5 – The Guardians Movie Trailer

I finally started editing my rough cut. For the last month I still felt like I was just scratching the surface of what these Larpers are all about. The more weekends I spent with them the more I felt closer to the heart of this story and from this I finally discovered the title to my film. The Documentary will be called The Guardians – A Larpers Tale. It’s about the world they’ve created. They are who they believe they are…”Guardians”.

I have pretty good audio but I would have liked to put a lavaliere mic on one of the Larpers because it would have gave a different perspective into the narrative. I also have to rerecord some of the audio sounds like swords hitting and battle sounds because there was a lot of wind and the audio in some cases became almost useless.

One of the players had a recorder and so I threw together a little behind the scenes parody to our documentary.

Blog 3 – Rexburg vs Idaho Falls

Idaho Falls and the Rexburg LARP groups have teamed up to battle one with another. They’ve dedicated themselves to their activity which has made filming them both a treat and a fun spectacle.

I quickly learned that shooting on a wide angle lens is much more ideal in these battles because there’s so much movement and I unfortunately missed a lot of good fights because of my tight shots. Second thing I learned is I either need to get my hands on some kind of stabilizer or gimbal because using a tripod has been difficult because there’s much more cardio in this activity than I anticipated.

I decided to simply observe this last Saturday as the teams fought. The plan is to immerse myself in their game and get more familiar with the players because I’m hoping they’ll feel more inclined to open up in their future interviews if I get to know them and take an interest in their sport.
